about

'TOO STRAIGHT FOR THE WEIRDS, TOO WEIRD FOR THE STRAIGHTS.'

The first Slushy Guts release came out on the 1st of November 2009, which makes it 10 years and 7 months old, during which time it has been abandoned in frustration many times, mostly due to widespread indifference and occasionally outright hostility. I suppose the experimental people didn't like it because it was too indie, and the indies didn't like it because it was too experimental, but maybe I've got it all wrong and all people didn't like it because it was just 'bad'. Every time I give up on it, I come back to it a month or two later, either because I'm a bloody-minded sadomasochist, or more likely because I just don't know what else to do with my time. I would probably continue even if interest literally zeroed out, and it's never been far from doing so. I'm recording a new album right now in fact, but as much as I'd like them to, blah blah blah.

This compilation is made up of songs from almost all the releases over the last 10 and and half years, focusing on the 'real' songs that a few people seem to think are ok, and cutting out all the supposed 'other stuff' that from what I am able to glean is seen as some sort of bizarre self-sabotage (not as far as I'm concerned) or perhaps just as pure crap. Nothing's been changed fixed up. Certain things on certain songs would be done differently now, but this is what I was genuinely happy with then, so I stand by it all. The hiss is still present on some songs and a few guitars are still out of tune here and there. Relax, go with it.

Anyway, so here you go, 17 'proper' songs. Hope you enjoy. Maybe I'll do a collection of all the 'other stuff' next?

S. Keane, London 2020

P.S The supposed arrogance of compiling your own best of (not to mention then writing this to go with it) is not lost on me, but as with everything else, if no one else offers, what can you do? In fact someone else did offer to do this a couple of years ago, but the label folded, it didn't transpire, which brings us back to what can you do?

P.P.S Tracks 5 and 11 sound awful on headphones. So don't use headphones, easy.
